New Literacies Follow Up

This morning I decided to follow up yesterday's blog by speaking to my 6th grade about new literacies. I explained the term to them and they totally got it! First we brainstormed video games that each of them play, discussed if they were violent/appropriate, talked about new literacies, if any, specific to each game, and I then asked them how much time they spend each day on their favorite game. They were clearly hooked because it is something that each of them gets. Each student, regardless of their academic skill level, has a certain expertise in "their" game. I ended by telling them we will all go on miniclips next week.

  1. Hi Deborah. My partner dropped the class and Dr. Wilber suggested I pick someone else's blog to comment on. I just wanted to let you know so you weren't confused by my comments. Hope you don't mind. Erin

Anyway, I think that it is so wonderful that you were able to open up a dialogue about video games, what they mean to each student, and what they are learning through the games. I bet that just opening up the classroom to a conversation about something that each student could so obviously relate to and with which they had experienced success, made them feel valued and like their opinions and interests were relevant and exciting. I am curious to hear where the conversation leads.

  2. Hi Erin, thank you for your comment. It was really one of the best class discussions I have had with this particular class this school year. The kids are very bright and articulate - each having the most up to date technological devices. So, yes they were thrilled to be discussing what they feel they know best. I will keep you posted!
